I surely dont have the answers to the infinite conundrums that might be caused by giving up summer (read Gladwell; he makes a far better argument than I can make, and hes not alone), but the numbers dont lie: the data from Alexanders study are impressive, and, I feel we can all agree that a 63 days difference between American school days and Japanese school days is by no means insignificant. Theres got to be some out of the box thinking for restructuring our school year to either contain more days, or maybe distribute extra evenly the big gap of nearly three months that depletes learning across the year, instead of keeping that time lumped together in its present summer vacation embodiment.
